How I Helped My Son With Nutrigenomics, Part 2

How I Helped My Son With Nutrigenomics, Part 2

If you’ve read Part 1 of this blog post, you know that I had some recent difficulty with my son, Jaxson’s, pediatrician and his treatment for breathing issues when he came down with cold viruses. I continue his story here because it did not end simply by changing the way we were treating his breathing difficulties. There was more to come I was not prepared for.

After all the steroids and breathing medications were out of his system, his behavior was still quite hyper and it was a trend I had been seeing with him for months, but I did not know what was happening. I thought I had had the problem completely solved when I talked about serotonin in this article and what I did to help him.

However, he caught that virus right after I thought things had improved and it was like it had thrown all the work I had done right out the window. I’ll be honest with you now and say, I think that was probably a good thing, because even when I thought I had the problem solved, apparently I really did not.

I took my son for his follow up visit to his new pediatrician a week after starting his antibiotics and his behavior was even worst than it had been before. In fact, it was worst than I had ever seen it. I happened to have both boys with me that day, as my older son, Jakob, who rarely gets sick now, appeared to have an ear infection so I had him checked as well.

Our new pediatrician observed and checked them both as she watched Jaxson zoom around her room and cause complete insanity in everything he touched, including driving Jakob crazy. Absolutely nothing would calm him down.

She listened to him and checked his ears and he was fine in that respect. But based on her observation, much to my surprise, she gave both of my sons a brand new diagnosis…

Sensory Processing Disorder.

If you know anything about Sensory Processing Disorder, then you know that it is defined as “a condition in which the brain has trouble receiving and responding to information that comes in through the senses. Some people with sensory processing disorder are oversensitive to things in their environment. Common sounds may be painful or overwhelming.”

It basically meant that my son was getting overstimulated very quickly by the environment he was in at the time, and that he could only tolerate so much stimulation before he had difficulty calming himself down. It is something that goes hand in hand with Autism, which Jakob has a diagnosis of, and also ADHD.

This suddenly explained to me why my son screamed for hours as a baby and no one could identify why or he seemed to have such severe tantrums that it was becoming unsafe for him.

What I could not understand for the life of me, was why, when I had repeatedly inquired with every pediatrician we saw over the last THREE YEARS about my son’s behavior, they were not able to identify or make the same diagnosis. I was only referred to Behavioral Health for Jaxson, whom I called and never received a return call from because it was not a possible case of Autism I was dealing with.

I was ONLY dealing with severe tantrums. No big deal to them I suppose.

Not only did I receive a referral for both boys to a developmental pediatrician, but also a referral for Occupational Therapy to help us all get some relief, as well as formal letters for the county and school system with an official diagnosis listed to ensure that they both get the therapy they need in school.

The question I had … why on earth hadn’t this been caught sooner?

As upset as I was by the lack of attention to detail, I was also relieved to be able to put a name to what had been going on with him for so long. I was already familiar with sensory processing issues, so I researched a bit, but very quickly I returned to Jaxson’s genetic mutation data we had obtained when we got Jakob’s for his Autism diagnosis.

This is when I really started to make sense of things.

When I reviewed his data, I found that Jaxson has a combination of genetic mutations that make it harder for him to break down adrenaline in his system. That explained a lot very quickly. It explained why he needed melatonin to sleep and he had trouble winding down. Basically, if he was running off adrenaline all the time, how could he wind down?

I was quickly able to research what supplements he needed and combined the use of my research with intuition and accessing his Akashic Record to find out what his nutritional needs are with respect to this issue and in general to help him as quickly as I could. Within 24 hours, I began to see improvement, and I’ve been researching more to find new ways to help him nutritionally. I can’t tell you how grateful I am that I was forced to switch pediatricians. If it were not for things getting really bad, I might never have done it, and I might still be dealing with tantrums I don’t understand.

I know there is more help to come for Jaxson and more I need to do to help him work through this, but I also know that we are now well on our way and more importantly back in control of our health and our lives.

All this is thanks to a dedicated and knowledgable pediatrician, the knowledge of genetics, and my ability to research genetic mutations while using my intuition to identify the right supplements to use.

How I Helped My Son With Nutrigenomics, Part 1

How I Helped My Son With Nutrigenomics, Part 1

I recently wrote a blog post about The Healing Power of Serotonin and in it I talked about my son, Jaxson, and these tantrums he was having that I’ve been working to resolve off and on for some time.

Jaxson’s story has quickly become an interesting one I’ve decided to share to help others if I can.

Shortly after I wrote that blog post, Jaxson, who is 3 years old, picked up what appeared to be just another cold from daycare. This one, however, went very quickly to his chest so I took him into the doctor we had been seeing for the past two years since we moved here.

For Jaxson, this was a particular concern because his colds have seemed to migrate there in the past causing him to be prescribed antibiotics and the use of an albuterol inhaler from a very young age. In fact, it had also been recommended to me starting last year that he use a steroid inhaler during allergy seasons and the winter season to try and minimize chest colds he seemed to be prone to because they caused wheezing in him.

This was recommended in an effort to reduce the use of oral steroids an antibiotics in case he did get sick. I was told that he would receive less overall medication from this inhaler than one course of oral steroids and it would prevent the need for them if he did get sick. I did not like the effect it had on my son’s behavior and I did not like the fact that he needed an inhaler on a daily basis at the age of 3, especially when I did not believe he had asthma.

I elected not to use the inhaler last fall and he ended up on oral steroids after a cold went to his chest, so of course, I thought I had made the wrong choice by not using the inhaler, so I gave in an used it the minimum amount possible and I would take breaks from it because it seemed there was a noticeable shift in his behavior when I used it.

When this cold moved to his chest, we saw a PA that we had seen many times before. She listened to my son intently and said he needed steroids because his breathing indicated it. I trusted her and her judgment, so I went along with her recommendation because I was concerned about my son’s breathing.

I gave him the medication in addition to the albuterol inhaler he had that was to be used as a rescue inhaler. His behavior was completely off the wall, and I was not able to complete more than a day and a half of the medication. On the second day, I called the doctor and she said to stop the medication immediately with no further instruction.

The third day of this, he was not much better and was regressing, so I got an appointment with what I believed to be one of the best pediatricians in the office. She listened to him and said she believed that unfortunately he did need steroids and gave him a dose of a different type of steroid in the office along with a breathing treatment consisting of two medications while we were in the office.

The makes a total of SIX breathing medications given to my son over the course of 4 days.

If you know me and have been following my writing, I’m not a person that believes in medications as a true resolution to issues, or else I would not be doing the work I do, but when you’re talking about your 3 yr old son’s breathing becoming an issue, you quickly listen to the doctor’s recommendation.

I also asked the doctor at the end of the visit if she thought he would outgrow the need for all of these medications and if she thought this was indicative of asthma. That’s when I was informed that he already had an official “asthma” diagnosis and that “anyone who sounded like that after a cold definitely has asthma.”

I was surprised to hear this because I remember very clearly being told by the same PA we had seen two days prior that an “official” asthma diagnosis was not made until a much later age, so I was operating off the assumption that my son was simply having difficulty with the maturity and anatomy of his lungs when he got a chest cold, and that he would most likely outgrow this issue.

All of these medications made him extremely hyper and agitated, and frankly did not solve the problem of his breathing and chest congestion. And with all the spiritual, energy, and nutrition work I do, I’m sure you are aware that I’m not a person who is a huge proponent of medications. They have their place, but I would prefer to not have to use them at all.

As I dealt with my son’s behavior and I finally got him to bed that evening, I was thinking back over what had transpired so quickly over the past few days and I suddenly realized that my son had been given SIX medications, yet no one had even considered recommending a chest x-ray.

How exactly did they know he didn’t simply need antibiotics?

I mean if he was so bad that he needed SIX breathing medications, shouldn’t one of the two doctors we saw at least have considered it? In fact, my gut was telling me that he was headed for a third visit in the next day or so that would end up requiring antibiotics to solve the issue when that was probably what should have been prescribed at the first visit.

Then it occurred to me, “if he has an asthma diagnosis, they are probably treating him as if he has asthma, which would necessitate steroids and breathing treatments and inhalers.” What was even more disturbing to me is that I had no idea when this diagnosis had been made or which one of the pediatricians we saw actually placed it in his chart. So I took my son’s health into my own hands and switched pediatricians. Yes, I had to drive over 30 minutes and cross the state line, but I’m thankful I did.

My son got a chest x-ray and antibiotics which he obviously needed because his symptoms were mostly resolved within 3 days, after which time he has had no need for either one of the inhalers the other doctors insisted he needed to use for MONTHS at a time. I also received a referral to a pediatric pulmonologist and allergy specialist for him.

Can someone PLEASE tell me why multiple pediatricians were not able to do what one was in one single visit? This is the question that plagues me and why I’m writing this blog post, along with a letter of complaint explaining my story to the doctor’s office.

His new doctor and I decided to forego any further medication until the next time he gets sick and see where he is with everything. In the mean time, I’m working on building his immune system so that he fights colds and allergic substances better.

But this is not the end of the story…

Keep reading here to find out what happened next and how I’m working with nutritional supplements to help Jaxson. It gets even MORE interesting, believe it or not.

Protect Yourself from Negative Energy with Good Nutrition

Protect Yourself from Negative Energy with Good Nutrition

More and more chronic health issues are found to be connected to vitamin and mineral deficiencies each day. If it’s not a case of your body lacking something it needs because you’re simply not getting enough in your diet, it’s often a genetic mutation that is causing you to process less of the nutrients you need from your food or perhaps even create a reduced ability in your body to detoxify.

(If you haven’t read it already, be sure to check out my article on Nutrigenomics where I talk about how nutrition can be directly applied to your genetics to help you overcome any genetic mutations you have.)

Take thyroid disease, for example, that’s being talked about so much lately. Many people take iodine to improve their thyroid functioning, but if you watched The Thyroid Secret docuseries, you might remember one of the doctors that was interviewed saying that often it’s not iodine that’s needed, but rather selenium, because they work in conjunction with one another.

Unfortunately, with the amount of stress a typical person has these days, it’s easy to have imbalances in your body. The key is identifying them and correcting them because simple imbalances in your body can have profound effects on your physical health.

What’s even more interesting about correcting imbalances in your physical body is that it’s not just about your physical body. It’s also about your energy body and your Soul. The healthier your physical body is, the healthier your energy body will be and the easier it will be for your Soul to connect to your physical body and express itself through you.

Imbalances in the physical body weaken the energy field to the point where negative energy can enter your energy field more easily than if you have a stronger, healthier natural energetic protection in place.

Yes, high vibration and frequency are everything when it comes to protecting yourself and raising yourself above the negativity that seems to have become so commonplace these days, but it all starts with creating balance and health within your physical body.

The most prevalent vitamin and mineral deficiencies seen today are Vitamin D, Iron, Magnesium, and the B Vitamins. A lot of this has to do with a combination of the foods we eat, our busy lifestyles and the genetic mutations that have evolved over time because of changes in our environment and lifestyles over time.

Being aware of these imbalances, and even more importantly, correcting them, is essential to your overall mental, emotional, physical, spiritual, and energetic health, because having these imbalances not only affects your health, but can also create weaknesses in your energy field that can easily allow negative energy to enter your energy field. What’s essential for you to understand is:

Certain forms of negative energy cannot remain in the human energy field in the presence of a healthy and balanced physical body that contains little or no vitamins or mineral deficiencies.

Iron deficiency is one of the biggest examples I can think of. Iron is one of the most important minerals for helping you to stay grounded, just like most minerals are grounding. However, more people are iron deficient than they realize. Low iron is also one of the things that makes it super easy for negative energy to enter the energy field and remain stuck there, necessitating a need for clearing.

Can nutrition clear the energy field? In some cases, yes it can. Think of correcting nutrient imbalances in your body like a form of kryptonite for negative energy.

When imbalances are corrected in the body, no matter what they are, it naturally returns to a state of health. This allows changes to take place that raise the vibration of your physical body enough so what doesn’t belong there no longer wants to be there and may even begin to leave on it’s own.

Is this always the case? No, but increasing your vibration through nutrition can make a really big difference.

Your life choices matter. Your environment and who you associate with matter. What situations you encounter and how you respond to them matter. But you can raise your physical vibration to the point where you begin to attract only better and better circumstances.

It all starts with what you put into your physical body.

How Spirit Gives You All The Answers You Need

How Spirit Gives You All The Answers You Need

I start this article with a quote from my older son, Jakob, as he stands up on a chair and puts his finger up high in the air and says, “I have an idea!” ????

Here’s a story that I know you Moms out there will appreciate, as well as anyone else who is genuinely interested in getting more in touch with your intuition…

I had been dealing with an extremely fussy toddler for a few weeks and couldn’t pinpoint the reason why. It was looking like he was really just tired, but he had had a ton of sleep too and it just wasn’t making sense.

He was so fussy, in fact, that I knew in my gut it was beyond what everyone wanted to blame on “terrible two’s” or that last tooth that was breaking through. “It’s just a phase” or “he needs more outside time” is what I got and one of those comments even came from a doctor as he was throwing a tantrum and screaming on the floor right in front of her…

None of this felt right to me. My “mommy gut” kicked in. (I know you Moms can relate!)

At any rate, I was working on my computer multi-tasking as I usually do, noticing that I was having some trouble focusing and felt really tired, which had not been unusual lately, except this particular time, I found it rather odd, considering I had had NINE HOURS of sleep the night before. There’s just no way I should have been that tired. I even started to wonder

No longer could I blame being tired on lack of sleep. I knew life with two boys could wear you down, but not this much. Then a thought came to me… an idea. It was the kind of thought that was really an urge … a push to DO something.

I knew it was a really a message from Spirit.

The “thought” I had told me to look up exactly what I was experiencing. As a side note, I’m a HUGE fan of using Google to find answers to random questions. I can’t even begin to tell you how many times I’ve had random search terms pop in my mind and plugged them into Google only to end up finding EXACTLY what I’m looking for.

As a result, I don’t hesitate when I get that push from Spirit.

So I plugged into Google a simple “still tired after 9 hours of sleep” and of course, articles about sleep disorders came up. But very quickly before I let myself get carried away and go completely hypochondriac (you know we’ve all been there at one time or another! LOL), I kept scanning and clicked on an article that listed the top 12 causes of fatigue – a much more common sense bet, I thought to myself.

Right there on page one of the article, anemia was listed as a cause of fatigue. Now, I’m certainly not saying either of us are anemic, but starting last year, I had been using a natural iron supplement for both myself and the boys. (Some of you natural Moms out there might be familiar with it – Floradix is an all-natural iron supplement made from herbs and Spinach leaves – great stuff!) It’s not something I used all the time, but just a small dose every so often as children’s multivitamins do not typically contain iron because of the potential for overdose.

When I saw anemia as a cause of fatigue, I remembered something – it had been months since I had used it because I thought we didn’t need it anymore.

I just knew I had my answer – to both my fatigue and my son’s super fussy behavior.

I went right to the cabinet and opened up the bottle that had been just sitting there waiting for me gave myself a dose. By the time I left to pick up the boys, I could tell my focus was coming back and everything was getting much clearer.

Later that day, I gave both boys a small dose as well. What was particularly interesting was my fussy one’s reaction – he closed his eyes and smiled with the cutest little smile after I gave it to him.

His whole demeanor changed after that. Now I’m certainly not claiming that I magically cured my toddler of teething pain or “terrible two’s,” but he chilled out tremendously. He went from screaming about wanting the vacuum (yes, my son has a fascination with vacuums! LOL) and hitting his brother to lying quietly on the floor watching a show on Sprout.

It was obviously what he needed.

Then I began to wonder if iron deficiency could cause sleep issues … another answer I’d been searching my mind for about him because he just didn’t seem like he was getting restful sleep and I was wondering if we had been all too quick to blame it on teething.

He was so calm that evening and so easy to put to sleep that I actually had the time to follow up my thought (which was really just another “AHA moment” courtesy of Spirit) with some more research on iron deficiency in toddlers and found that it can, in fact, cause sleep issues as well.

I knew I had just figured out something important and sent an email off to his pediatrician to share my thoughts and see if we should check his iron levels in a blood test.

It was probably that growth spurt or that recent stomach bug he had that drained him to the point where he needed to be supplemented with some extra iron. But whatever the reason, I was nothing short of relieved, as I know all you Moms out there can relate to, because when your child is not happy, you will not be.

But, more importantly, the big lesson here, and what I want you to take away from this story is …

FOLLOW YOUR INTUITION. LISTEN TO THE MESSAGES SPIRIT HAS FOR YOU.

Spirit is ALWAYS there, waiting to help you and guide you. Spirit WANTS to help you succeed and live a happy, healthy, abundant life.

But YOU HAVE TO LISTEN to hear the messages.

I never would have gotten the message to do that simple Google search if I hadn’t been sitting quietly working and pondering and wondering what on Earth was going on. It was the only way I could possibly have gotten the answer and I urge you to do the same.

Give yourself the time and space you need to allow Spirit to come through.

Your Health: Foundation Of Manifesting

Your Health: Foundation Of Manifesting

I’ve been on an interesting journey in my life over the last year and a half. Many things have happened with the passing of my father, my husband leaving the military due to back injuries, moving back to the area of the country I’m originally from, and then losing two other family members. It’s been one heck of a year of transitions, that’s for sure!!

I learned so much along my journey over the last year and a half, but the thing I learned the most about is the importance of taking good care of your health. Not just because you should take good care of yourself, but because when you don’t, you will lack the energy and the drive you need to create and manifest what you desire for your life. And you simply won’t enjoy your life as much as you should be able to.

I’m sure you’ve all heard the example scenario where you wake up in the morning and stub your toe, and your day just seems to go downhill from there? You burn your breakfast and then almost get in an accident, and work was more stressful than ever. Sound familiar?

To put it simply, things just won’t go very well for you on a day-to-day basis if you aren’t feeling well, and especially if you wake up not feeling well or are low on energy. But it’s not just energy you are low on. You have to look at the deeper reason why you feel that way to start with. If you start your day in a bad mood, more than likely you are low on some sort of neurotransmitter or a hormone you need to give you that boost of energy and the good mood that comes among with it.

For any of you who have been following my blog for a while, you might know that my son, Jakob, has mild Autism. That journey is a story for another day, but one of the most valuable things we have taken away from this experience so far was learning about our genetic mutations (using a simple genetic test we had done on our own offered by 23andme.com) and more importantly, how in many cases, when you have a chronic health issue, it’s a sign that your body isn’t getting something it needs. In many cases, this goes back to a genetic mutation.

I was profoundly reminded of the importance of understanding the source of my issues, even down to the genetic level, over the last year as I’ve been battling what was so quickly labeled “adrenal fatigue.” This appeared to be a result of all the stressful situations I had encountered over the last year and a half, including the TWO car accidents I didn’t list above.

For a very long time, I bought into that label, never really questioning it, happily taking my extra supplements to help my adrenals. But when I noticed that things were getting worst, and new symptoms were showing up, it began to no longer make quite so much sense, and I began to look deeper again, researching and referencing my own genetic data. Then, I got some help!

I had a phone consultation with a practitioner who specializes in reading your genetic data and telling you what it is you’re not getting nutritionally and what supplements you need based as a result of your specific genetic mutations. (Thank you MTHFR Support for providing a list of practitioners that offer this service.)

Honestly, this was the best decision I have made in a long time. I scheduled the appointment for myself and one of my sons, and literally, within a few days, everything began to change for both of us. The trend I was on with my health for the last year has finally begun to shift in an upward direction. The best part is that it was so simple. It did have a cost associated with it, but the price tag was well worth it.

I still need to have appointments for my other son and my husband to see what else they need that they are not getting, but understanding the source of our issues has been invaluable. I have more energy every day, I wake up in a much better mood than I ever have before, and most of all I’m enjoying my every day life FAR more than I ever have before.

The reason I tell you this story is to stress the importance of ensuring that your health is on track and that your body is getting everything it needs each day. Everyone’s issue may not be the same as ours and be a result of a genetic mutation, but knowing the source of your issues is essential, so that you can actually wake up each morning and ENJOY your day (who doesn’t want that??)

If there is one thing I ask you to take away from this story, it’s this…

Giving yourself good health is the most basic foundation you can create for yourself to help you have everything you want in your life.
Type a message…
